About the role

This locum consultant post provides maternity leave cover across St Mary's Hospital (SMH) and Charing Cross Hospital (CXH). The successful candidate will contribute to TB and general respiratory clinics, EBUS and pleural services, and participate in the respiratory ward consultant rota at CXH, including management of patients with acute respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilation on the Acute Respiratory Unit. The role also includes contribution to the acute medical take at SMH. Travel time between sites is included in the job plan. The post is suitable for a post-CCT clinician seeking consultant-level development within a supportive team. The post-holder will work closely with the Trust pleural lead, Dr Clare Ross, supporting a comprehensive pleural service that includes indwelling pleural catheters, pleural aspiration, biopsy, ambulatory pneumothorax pathways, medical thoracoscopy, weekly MDT meetings, and dedicated pleural clinics. The service is supported by a pleural fellow and specialist pleural nurse. The candidate must be independently competent in EBUS, with the Trust performing over 300 EBUS procedures annually and offering robotic-assisted bronchoscopy.

The post holder will work with multidisciplinary and clinical management teams to deliver high-quality Acute, General Medical and Respiratory services, including ward and acute take responsibilities. They must maintain GMC specialist registration, required competencies, and attend all agreed Direct Clinical Care activities. A strong commitment to patient-centred care is expected, ensuring patients are involved in decisions about their treatment. The Trust supports continuing medical education through protected time and funding. The post holder will be encouraged to participate in research, teaching and training activities and will contribute to service development and innovation. Working with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues, they will support improvements in clinical outcomes, operational effectiveness, patient flow, infection control, readmission rates, waiting times and financial performance, while ensuring accurate clinical data and cost-effective service delivery. Responsibilities include supervision, appraisal and development of junior medical staff, ensuring compliance with workforce regulations, appropriate rota cover and participation in recruitment and job planning. The post holder will actively contribute to clinical governance through audit, incident review, implementation of NICE guidance, maintenance of clinical protocols and promotion of best practice, including infection prevention and control.

Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
GMC registered Medical Practitioner
MRCP(UK) or an equivalent qualification.
Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a.Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) b.Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) c.European Community Rights
CCT in Respiratory and general internal medicine
Experience in TB and bronchiectasis clinics
Independent practice in bronchoscopy
Independence in EBUS-TBNA
Pleural ultrasound level 1
IT Skills and computer literacy
Competency in NIV/ management of acute respiratory failure
Experience of leading acute unselected medical take
