About the role
The appointee will be within the General Surgery Clinical Directorate (CDU), and join the team specialising in Emergency General Surgery. The CDU works in specialist teams (Emergency, Colorectal, Upper GI, Breast and Vascular) with a good deal of flexibility and excellent working relationships between teams. You will be part of a team of 4 consultant surgeons who deliver the emergency surgical service during the day, Mon to Fri. All GI surgeons contribute to the out of hours and weekend cover on a frequency of 1 in 12. During the weekday mornings, there are 2 emergency surgeons leading the on call/take/emergency wards/emergency theatres and ambulatory clinic. During the day the wider emergency team currently comprises 2 Specialty Trainees, 1 Core Trainee, 1 Advanced Care Practitioner and 2-4 FY1's. The successful candidate will be assigned a mentor. We are a very supportive and close-knit service with good relationships throughout. Whilst no formal arrangements exist for out of hours/weekend support, it is recognised that emergency surgery is a highly complex and sometimes very demanding field requiring expertise and guidance from other specialists. This is provided on an ad hoc basis by any and every consultant in the department who can be approached at any time to help in difficult situations as needed.
