Job Title: Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine Department/Clinical Service Unit: Anaesthetics and Critical Care Location: Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Salary: £ 109,725 to £ 145,478 per annum pro rata Programmed Activities: 5 PA Applicants are invited to apply for a 12-month( fixed-term from 01.10.2026 until 30.09.2027) Consultant post in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post will commence on 1st October 2026, is to cover a 12-month sabbatical and comprises 5 programmed activities (PAs), allowing the successful applicant the opportunity to pursue complimentary activities. A position on the specialist register with CCT (or equivalent) in ICM will be required at the time of interview. This is a non-exclusive locum appointment, and the postholder may undertake additional employment elsewhere in the remaining 0.5 WTE, provided this does not conflict with their duties, on-call commitments, or the organisation's governance requirements

The successful applicant will add to the existing a group of 10 intensive care consultants with sub-speciality interests in anaesthesia and acute medicine, who are responsible for the 10 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Within the department, there will be excellent opportunities to develop personal interests, including echocardiography (including TOE), ultrasound, research, governance, outreach, ICU follow-up and NHS management. Job share arrangements with neighbouring trusts will also be considered on application. In addition to general adult medical and surgical patients, the unit supports looking after a high number of paediatric patients requiring stabilising critical care and as such, an interest in this area would be advantageous. On-call commitments will be 1 in 11 non-residents for the ICU.

Essential

Medical degree
FRCA or equivalent
Fully registered with GMC
Commensurate with FFICM and FRCA
Demonstrate ability to lead a critical care multi-disciplinary team
Demonstrate can manage complex medical and surgical critical care patients
Evidence of recent attendance at Advanced Life Support/ Paediatric Advanced Life Support Course or equivalent
Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
A proven background in organising and delivering undergraduate and post graduate teaching and research with evidence of training for the role is highly desirable
Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
Ability to motivate and develop training medical staff
Ability to work effectively and productively in a team
Self-motivation and leadership skills
Appropriate IT skills for a consultant post in ICM and anaesthesia
Enthusiasm & ability to work under pressure
Ability to work independently as well as part of the Anaesthetic Directorate
To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and the Trust as a whole
Demonstration of immunisation against Hepatitis B plus proof of HbsAg negative status
Will need to reside within 10 miles of the Hospital or half an hour's travelling time for on-call commitments
Able to appraise research
Understanding of Evidence Based Medicine
Thorough understanding of the principles of audit
Postgraduate experience in anaesthetic and ICM to level commensurate with a CCT in both specialities

Desirable

CCT in anaesthetics
CCT in ICM
Entry on GMC Specialist Register
Further qualifications in ICM e.g. DICM, EDIC, FFICM or equivalent
Echocardiography / ultrasound skills
Knowledge and skills in Human Factors and Crisis Resource Management for anaesthesia/ICM
Ability to be able to appraise both trainees and other staff
Demonstrate ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role

Diploma or other qualification in Medical Education

Interest in medical management

Ability and desire to take part in Clinical Directorate Management

Publications in peer reviewed journals in the field of anaesthesia and Critical Care

Participation ICM based research

Experience at consultant level in both ICM and Anaesthetics
