About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen at UHNM to join the dynamic team of 7 Nephrology Consultants (participating on a 1:8.5 on-call rota), 2 Specialty Doctors and 12 Medics working at our main Royal Stoke Site and Satellite Units at County, and Leighton Hospitals. The successful candidate will lead the Acute Kidney Injury service for Renal Medicine, as well asour Young Adult Service. As seen in the attached job plan, they will also contribute a weeklytransplant clinic, a general nephrology clinic, and will be responsible for the care of a cohort ofhaemodialysis patients at our main RSUH site. As AKI lead, working alongside our team of AKI nurses, they will be responsible for driving further improvements in our service. There is significant scope to work with our colleagues, includingthose in Acute Medicine, General Medicine, and the Virtual Ward, to further improve the care weprovide across the entire Trust The post holder will be expected to contribute regularly to: procedures, supervision and training of the renal STs and trust grades. As well as contributing to the education of trainees, quality improvement, research activities, and clinical governance of the service. The UHNM renal team has a very strong clinical research programme led by International expert Professor Simon Davies and Dr Mark Lambie based within the University of Keele Institute for Science and Technology for Medicine. Applicants require full GMC Registration and should be either on or within 6 months of entry onto the Specialist Register at the time of interview.

Essential

Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine via one of the following: a) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
MRCP (UK) or an equivalent Qualification
Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Renal Medicine
Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within both specialties.
Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others
Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
Understanding of the Clinical Governance process
Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines
Ability to organise, and manage outpatient priorities, waiting times / lists
Ability to manage and lead clinical team. Competent in basic information technology
Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors
Experience of conducting clinical audit.
Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making.
Ability to understand and apply re-search methodology
Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
Documented previous contribution to substantial departmental development
Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgments when faced with conflicting pressures.
Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.

Desirable

MD, PhD or equivalent
Specialty Certificate Examination
Experience in running a hypertension service
Experience in advanced kidney care service
Higher training in a dedicated specialty training scheme.
