About the role
We are looking to appoint Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our team, based at Yeovil District Hospital in Somerset. The postholder will provide specialist diagnosis and management of gastroenterology, hepatology, and general medical patients at YDH. They will maintain ongoing responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care, respond to referrals from primary care and other specialties, and offer expert gastroenterology input for patients across the Trust. The role includes caring for acutely admitted and elective gastroenterology patients, supporting the development of nurseled endoscopy services, and managing a wide range of conditions in outpatient clinics. The appointee will supervise and train junior doctors, contribute to teaching for nursing staff and medical students, and participate in multidisciplinary and pathology meetings. They will ensure clinical practice meets governance standards, engage in annual appraisal and revalidation, and maintain effective communication with colleagues and external partners. Awareness of NHS budgeting considerations and active involvement in service development are expected. The role also includes participation in the GI bleed oncall rota (approximately one weekday every two weeks and one weekend every eight weeks).
Diagnosis and management of patients with Gastroenterological and general medical conditions Continuing responsibility for care of patients in liaison with consultant colleagues. Respond to and manage in- and outpatient referrals from primary care and other specialties. Professional supervision, management and training of junior medical staff. The appointee will be expected to be aware of the general and local budgeting issues within the NHS. The appointee will be expected to be fully involved in the development of the specialty. To ensure clinical practice is monitored and performed in accordance with requirements from clinical governance. Participate in annual Consultant Appraisal and revalidation as recommended by the Royal College of Physicians and General Medical Council. Participation in Pathology and Multidisciplinary Team Meetings. Care of patients in gastroenterology/hepatology (and a few general medicine) admitted via acute take as well as electively. Provide specialist gastroenterology opinion on in-patient from other specialties Develop and support nurse endoscopy services See and treat patients with a wide spectrum of gastroenterology conditions in outpatient setting. Promote and take part in teaching and training of nursing staff and medical students Maintain effective and timely communication with colleagues in the Trust, primary care and other centres as necessary. To take part in GI bleed on call rota of approximately 1 weekday every 2 weeks and 1 weekend every 8 weeks
