About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Surgery with a Benign Upper GI Sub Specialty Interest. The post holder will be based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, South Wales. The Department of General Surgery is part of the Planned Care Directorate and spans all 3 District General Hospital sites; Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant and Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. The post holder may be required to work across other sites within the Health Board. The on call is 1in 8. Although the Job description may specify a base of work a negotiation for hospital site can be considered. The post holder will be required to share with consultant colleagues the responsibility for providing outpatient and inpatient services for the local population and in doing so, foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical department, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners and management teams. The post will also work with the Directorate Management team to assist in the strategic planning and modernisation of General Surgical services, deliver internal and external targets for patient activity and achieve financial balance. The post will be part of the consultant emergency on call rota on a 1:8 basis with a 10-session job plan with enhanced payment for the on-call commitment.

Essential

MBChB/MBBS or equivalent FRCS or equivalent At time of interview, the candidate must be: On the specialist register Or be within 6 months of the anticipated CCT / CESR (CT) date if progress has been satisfactory and it is anticipated that the outcome of the final ARCP will recommend that training will be completed by the time the recommend CCT / CESR (CT) date is reached Or have a primary medical qualification and a recognised specialist qualification from an EEA country or Switzerland which will allow directed entry onto the Specialist Register
Prior to taking up the post the candidate must be on the Specialist Register
Previous experience in management of general/emergency surgery including laparoscopic management of benign UGI disease.
Evidence of ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients undergoing Surgery
JAG accreditation for upper GI endoscopy is essential
Experience in managing emergency surgery
Evidence of high level of skill in teaching medical, nursing and other professional colleagues in formal and informal modes
Evidence of active and constructive involvement in clinical audit or quality improvement and the implementation of actions to be taken on the basis of outcomes
Understands evidence-based practice Interest in research & development Encourages ongoing learning & an educative culture, both for self and others
Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications in peer reviewed journals or thesis
Good communication and empathy skills with patients and colleagues
Evidence of willingness to participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment to provide an integrated service
Ability to work as a member of a team, both through communication and sharing workload Ability to cope with stressful situations including clinical crises
Ability to prioritise and organise workload and co-ordinate staff Ability to lead a team Evidence of a clear understanding of principles and practice of involving patients in all aspects of their care Willingness to work flexibly to deliver clinically effective and cost effective healthcare
Proven track record in clinical audit

Desirable

Higher degree or Fellowship
Experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures would be an advantage but not essential
