Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

The post is a consultant position that is flexible to allow for the reconfiguration of colorectal services. The postholder will be encouraged to work closely with our gastroenterology and endoscopy services to develop a robust and effective service, with a particular interest in supporting the two-week wait colonoscopy service and contributing experience in advanced colonoscopy. Additionally, the post holder will be encouraged to develop/participate in other benign colorectal conditions, such as day surgery and endoscopy. In his/her role, the postholder will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team providing and developing emergency, general and colorectal care, as well as supporting the two-week wait colonoscopy service and assisting in the development of pelvic floor services at King's.

This post will be based primarily at King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill site, although the post holder will be expected to undertake cross-site operating, with clinical and elective duties also required at the Princess Royal University Hospital, particularly for main theatres, as services and collaborations expand. In addition, the individual will be required to contribute actively to the general workload of the department as well as to teaching and training junior staff members. The job plan comprises an average of 9 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care and 1 Supporting Professional Activity, giving a total of 10 Programmed Activities. Any additional activity will be allocated to Supporting Professional and/or Other Activities. Currently, the Emergency General Surgery & Trauma On-Call commitment is on a 1 in 12 basis, and the post holder will also participate in the Colorectal on-call rota on a 1 in 7 basis, for which a 5% on-call availability supplement of full-time basic salary is payable. The post holder will be expected to participate in these on-call activities. The department is currently undergoing a change in the model for providing both acute emergency surgery and major trauma surgery and it is expected that the post holder will be contributing to this along with other consultant colleagues in the care group.
