About the role

An opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant in General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery due to a current vacancy. The post holder will join the established General Surgical team and is expected to demonstrate excellence in General Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, and emergency surgical care. In collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the department operates a Chole-QuIC 3 pathway, and the post holder will be expected to participate in the emergency cholecystectomy rota. Flexibility is required, and the appointee will also be expected to contribute to the elective General Surgical workload in line with service needs.

The Department of Surgery is supported by a strong Medical Gastroenterology service, which is JAG-accredited and delivers NHS bowel cancer screening services,

including colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. The unit provides a comprehensive endoscopy service, including flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, gastroscopy, advanced polypectomy, and ERCP. An emergency endoscopy service, including colonic stenting, is also available, alongside capsule endoscopy services on site.

Person specification

Essential

Relevant professional qualifications
Degree from a recognised University
FRCS or recognised equivalent qualification
Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
• Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: - Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST/CST
Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialty
Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
Ability to advise on the smooth running of specialist services
Ability to prioritise workloads both clinical and non-clinical when subjected to conflicting pressures
Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
