About the role

We are seeking enthusiastic and visionary Consultants in Geriatric Medicine to help shape and grow our evolving older person services. This is a pivotal moment to join Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as we expand our front-door services and begin laying the foundations for a community-based model of care over the next 2-5 years--reflecting our commitment to delivering care closer to home.

Our Trust operates older person services across three sites: Winchester, Basingstoke, and Andover. We are currently looking for consultants who are particularly interested in working at the Basingstoke site, where exciting developments are underway.

At Winchester, we provide care for older adults across dedicated inpatient beds, located within three specialist wards: Clifton, Wykeham, The Mount. These wards are central to our mission of delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality care for our ageing population.

We have recently launched a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Winchester, which has quickly become a vital part of our integrated care pathway. It works closely with community partners and supports patients through our frailty virtual wards, ensuring continuity of care beyond the hospital setting.

Beyond our acute inpatient wards at Winchester and Basingstoke, we also operate a dedicated rehabilitation unit in Andover. Looking ahead, we are committed to strengthening our liaison services to provide more comprehensive and coordinated care across the Trust.

Person specification

Essential

Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Awareness of current acute medical initiatives and developments
Recent relevant clinical teaching experience within medical and allied disciplines
MBBS or equivalent
Licence to practice and full registration with GMC
MRCP (Paces)
Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
Advanced Life Support
Eligible to work in the UK
Evidence of achievement of GMC competency standards of Good Medical Practice including: delivery of good acute clinical care and maintaining good medical practice
good working relationships with colleagues including evidence of good team-working and an understanding of the importance of multidisciplinary working in delivery of patient
good relationships and communication with children, parents, adults and staff
good teaching and training
professional behaviour and probity
Ability to work adaptably and manage different clinical areas as part of the on call team under consultant supervision
At least 6 months prior UK experience at middle grade / registrar level in one or more a medical specialties
Knowledge and experience of NHS

Ability to understand local and national political agendas and respond accordingly
Ability to perform effectively and maturely in management roles for the benefit of the service.
Ability to plan strategically and to demonstrate sound judgement
Ability to lead, motivate and develop the multidisciplinary team
Ability to organise work of self and team in an efficient and effective way
Evidence of experience and active engagement in clinical audit
Ability to work in a team, ability to work flexibly with colleagues, sometimes at short notice, ability to manage staff and resources
Ability to remain calm under pressure, evidence of self-motivation
