Applications are invited for a highly motivated Clinical Fellow in Brain Injury Rehabilitation based at the Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, situated in the grounds of Frenchay Hospital on the outskirts of the cosmopolitan city of Bristol.

This is a full time appointment for 30 hours per week, with the need for occasional flexibility. There is no on-call commitment.

The Centre is a highly reputable, busy 52 bed unit offering brain injury rehabilitation for adolescent and adult patients, including patients with complex acquired neurological injuries and may include patients with a tracheostomy or challenging behaviours.

The Clinical Fellow is encouraged to play an active role in all aspects of the assessment and management of patients. The particular role, of the Clinical Fellow, is to provide continuity of medical care, day to day management of the in-patient service, report preparation and close liaison with the Centre’s friendly inter-disciplinary team. The post holder will have close working relationships with the acute neurosciences services.

Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC. In addition, experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

The main role is to look after the general Medical needs of the Level 1 & 2 patients who are in the process of rehabilitation from their acquired brain injury by providing on site cover from 9am to 5pm. Occasional irregular duties/hours, outside the standard work hours, may be necessary for the effective smooth running of the Unit. Their medical needs are variable from basic management to occasional acute emergencies requiring transfer to the main hospital site. Some patients have challenging behaviours as a consequence of their acquired brain injury. All new patients require clerking with the acquisition of relevant collateral information from referring ward/hospital and, where necessary, from the relatives/family.

The post holder will work with Dr Graham, Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine and Consultants in Neuropsychiatry and Neuropsychology. The consultants are accessible and approachable for any issue concerning the neuro-behavioural and neuro-physical management of the in-patients. The Fellow is, however, encouraged to take the lead in the general medical management of the patients.

The post holder will work within the structure of an interdisciplinary team, supporting the nursing and therapy staff as well as the patient(s) and their relatives and family. The Fellow plays a pivotal role in liaising with the staff, therapists and clinical professionals.

Report preparation, comprehensive discharge summaries and documentation of issues concerning the patients are essential components of the post.

Essential

MBBS/MBChB
Maintain Full registration with the GMC, with a licence to practice
Evidence of recent CME/CPD and reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
Good written communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
Ability to work independently as well as part of the multi-disciplinary team. To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole.
Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team.
Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff/nursing/ therapy staff.

Desirable

MRCP 1 and/or2/Complete MRCGP
MRCPsych Paper A and/or Paper B
MRCS Paper A and/or Paper B
Neurology, Neurorehabilitation and/or Neuropsychiatry experience.
Experience in audit project
Proven teaching ability.

Proven track record in teaching
