About the role

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow Portfolio Pathway in Anaesthesia, with start date in August 2026. The tenure of all post is 36 months, employed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH) undertaking rotational placements at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (18 months at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and 18 months at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals). The posts do not attract a National Training Number. The posts are based within the existing teams with access to departmental teaching and other developmental opportunities. Despite not being recognised as 'training posts' they allow doctors to improve the breadth and depth of their experience in Anaesthetics. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

The STH anaesthetic department provides anaesthesia services for both the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the Northern General Hospital. Being a tertiary and quaternary referral centre, the clinical caseload is stimulating, and resident doctors experience a variety of interesting and challenging cases, having opportunities to learn advanced skills and techniques. We provide anaesthesia for Cardiothoracic surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Complex Urology and Gynaecology, ENT and Max-Fax, Breast surgery, Plastic and reconstructive, and Burns surgery, complex Colorectal, Upper GI, and HPB surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Spinal Injuries, Renal including transplant services, Vascular and interventional radiology. We are also a Major Trauma Centre and as such, our residents experience being part of an active Major Trauma response team. Additionally, we provide anaesthesia at non-theatre locations, including for Fluoroscopy procedures, Endoscopy, MRI, and ECT, and offer experience in deep sedation

Essential

Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise
Basic Medical Degree
Completion of IAC (Initial Assessment of Competency) in Anaesthesia RCOA approved
Primary FRCA or equivalent qualification recognised under RCoA "Accepted Test of Knowledge".
Completion of ALS
Evidence of at least 5 years structured Anaesthetic training (UK or overseas equivalent).
Minimum 2 years NHS Experience
Completion of at least 2 years Anaesthesia with documented NHS experience in both anaesthesia and intensive care with logbook
Successful completion of Core Training in Anaesthesia or equivalent.
Demonstrate the ability to prioritise clinical need and the ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
Recognition and initial management of the acutely ill patient.
Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and risk minimisation.
Competence in peri-operative management of general surgical patients.
Demonstrate the ability to maximise safety and minimise risk.
Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 24 months
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development in line with RCoA standards.
Experience teaching medical students and resident doctors
Participation in departmental education programmes.
Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
Ability to undertake research, audit, or quality improvement projects
Evidence of participation in clinical audit or quality improvement projects.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Effective communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues.
Ability to maintain clear, accurate and contemporaneous medical records and communicate with other hospital departments and primary care.
Ability and willingness to work within NHS performance frameworks and targets.
Demonstrates effective organisational skills and ability to manage time and learning independently.
The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2014).

Higher degree, e.g.MD/PhD
Full FRCA
ATLS or equivalent
Further NHS experience particularly in Anaesthesia and ITU
Competence in advanced interventions: percutaneous tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, complex ventilation, advanced haemodynamic monitoring
Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Presentation of personal work at professional society meetings.
Maintenance of structured CPD diary or portfolio
