Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist

The Gastroenterology department is currently based at WRH for in-patient work and cross site (WRH/Kidderminster/Redditch/Evesham/Malvern) for out patient work. Most gastroenterology services are provided including diagnostic endoscopy (OGD, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, push enteroscopy), therapeutic endoscopy (including EMR in the upper and lower GI tract, dilatation, stenting, PEG placement, varices banding etc), ERCP, EUS and video capsule endoscopy. The IBD service is currently run by 4 specialist nurses and includes a helpline and biologics service (with over 1000 patients). There are 2 surgeons with a special interest in IBD and a monthly IBD MDT. We also have a liver CNS who runs specialist clinics, the fibroscan service and is trained to do paracentesis. The ward is currently supported by a Tier 1 Physicians associate and 2 Tier 2 Physicians associates to help run the service. We have weekly team meetings, monthly governance meetings, upper and lower GI cancer MDT and GI pathology MDT meetings. There are weekly GIM grand rounds.

The post will involve regular endoscopy and clinic sessions at Worcester, Kidderminster and Redditch together with some in-reach to in-patients in Redditch requiring gastroenterology review. It is expected that the post holder will be competent in OGD and flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy (this will normally mean holding JAG accreditation unless the applicant was fully trained prior to the availability of JAG accreditation). Therapeutic OGD to treat upper GI bleeding is also expected. In addition to these duties, the appointee will provide cover for consultant colleagues who are on leave .On call commitments will be 1 in 9 for endoscopy (predominantly GI bleeding) on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site and the Alexandra Hospital Redditch site. This is covered in 1 week long blocks where 2 consultants do either 2 or 5 on calls during the week. There is also a commitment to provide a gastroenterology ward round on a Saturday morning when on call and in-reach into ED/MAU on a Sunday morning. These frequencies will fall in the future with the appointment of other posts. There is also a second on consultant who covers Advice and Guidance, in-patient referrals (supported by our registrars), the upper GI MDT, a rapid access clinic. There is an occasional requirement to review a small numbers of patients (typically <5) who are medical outliers at WRH. Where required, this additional work is remunerated at trust agreed hourly rates of payment.
