About the role
Overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. Responsibility for the core consultant activity of day to day running & leadership of the clinical activities in the paed intensive care and continued clinical presence in the units during the day ward rounds, emergency & post-operative admissions when on for PICU. Participate in network activities related to critical care. Organising network teaching activities were requested & liaising with one or more of the critical care networks referring centres. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing medical education activity, locally & nationally.2 consultants are always on call for intensive care, giving each Unit (general and cardiac) separate & independent consultant cover and a third on call during the day to provide support. The service is consultant led, and often consultant delivered, depending on the clinical acuity of patients and the experience of the middle grade clinical staff. On-call commitments are predominantly non-resident; with a resident component in Cardiac PICU until 22:00, transitioning to non-resident on-call thereafter. Consultants may additionally be required to remain or become resident beyond this period, depending on clinical activity and service demand, at their professional discretion across both the units.
