Main duties of the job

The Consultant in Palliative Medicine will provide specialist palliative and end of life care across community, hospital, hospice and virtual ward settings throughout Cornwall, working as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team. The role involves delivering expert clinical care, providing specialist advice to healthcare professionals, participating in the on-call rota, and supporting the development of innovative services that enable patients to receive care closer to home. The post holder will contribute to teaching and supervision of medical students, trainees and healthcare professionals, undertake audit, research and quality improvement activities, and play an active role in service development, clinical governance and leadership to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care across the county

Essential

CCT in Palliative Care
Recognised basic Medical Degree
MRCP membership
Inclusion (or eligibility for inclusion) on the Specialist Register or a Specialty Trainee within 6 months of gaining CCT
Satisfactory clearances from enhanced DBS disclosure and health checks.
Experience in assessing and treating patients with palliative care needs in inpatient, out-patient and community settings.
Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
Previous experience in taking a leadership role in several multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring high quality care and staff morale
Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work.
Ability to appraise own performance and have excellent written and oral communication skills
Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a consultant.
Knowledge of risk management and specialist risk assessment for secure services
Understanding of policies and service systems for people with palliative care needs.
Ability to use IT, including e-mail and the internet.
Understanding of the principles of teaching.
Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and multi-disciplinary teaching
Ability to critically appraise published research.
Experience of carrying out audit/quality improvement projects.
Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS.
Positive attitude to multidisciplinary working and leadership.
Ability to deal effectively with pressure
Positive approach to the job planning and appraisal process.
Flexible approach to working practice.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.

Desirable

Relevant Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
Completion of Clinical and Educational Supervisor Training
Experience of working across different SPC settings, including charitable sector.
Evidence of specific achievements that demonstrate leadership skills.
Knowledge of recent changes in the NHS.
DipEd Postgraduate teaching qualification or equivalent.
Organisation of further teaching programmes in medical education or multi professional education.
Interest in research
