About the role

The Department of Urology is seeking a new full-time (10 PA) substantive Consultant. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking team working as part of the Guy's Urology Team in partnership with Lewisham and Greenwich Trust (LGT), to provide a 'Guy's Urology with LGT' service.

This initiative is the result of important strategic partnership and will deliver a new, shared clinical service between GSTT and LGT. The two organisations believe that working together will improve access, patient experience and equity for patients across South East London.

The partnership will operate on a hub-and-spoke model, with LGT serving as the primary site for local urology services primarily for Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley; GSTT will act as the hub for higher complexity procedures, with redistribution of appropriate procedures from GSTT to an agreed plan over time.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a first-class team in an active and progressive Central London teaching hospital environment.

The post will have clinical sessions at both Lewisham & Greenwich NHS trust and at Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Trust in the Department of Urology, as part of the 'Guy's Urology with LGT' initiative.

The job plan will contain 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week on average, to be carried out Guy's & St Thomas' and Lewisham & Greenwich sites as indicated in the proposed timetable. This includes One Stop clinics, specialist clinics and surgical sessions.

The post includes an 1 in 8 on-call rota at Lewisham and Greenwich trust, working in tandem with the GSTT rota (Category A).

The two trusts will work collaboratively on recruitment, job planning, and shared operational and clinical governance, and are developing a robust and sustainable model for acute pathway care.

The Urology Investigation Unit at University Hospital Lewisham

Lewisham & Greenwich Trust is investing £3.5million in the development of a comprehensive range of Urology services to be delivered from our new, purpose-built Urology Investigation Unit (UIU) at University Hospital Lewisham.

As a member of our Guy's Urology with LGT consultant team, you will play a central role in shaping a new network model of clinical care; delivering a high-quality service, contributing to improved outcomes and ensuring an excellent experience for both patients and staff.

Person specification

Essential

Full GMC registration with a licence to practice. Entry on the Specialist Register via CCT or CESR, or evidence of intention to submit portfolio imminently
FRCS (Urol) or equivalent
Ability to perform complex NMIBC procedures independently to a high level, including TULA, and Blue light cystoscopy
Experience managing radiation cystitis
Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
Clear understanding and track record of clinical governance and audit. IT skills appropriate for the post
Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority
Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and ability to work co-operatively with others.
Able to change and adapt, respond to changing circumstances and to cope with setbacks or pressure.
Ability to work as part of a team
Experience of performance management, developing and motivating staff.
Knowledge of finance and budgets.
