About the role

We're looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Liaison Psychiatry Team at Royal Surrey County Hospital. This is a 12-month fixed-term post focused on supporting adults with urgent or complex mental health needs during their time in hospital.

You'll lead the care of working-age adults, working alongside a multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists, and doctors. The service provides assessments, treatment, and support to people seen in A&E or admitted to hospital wards, helping them get the right care quickly and safely.

You'll be part of a well-established and supportive team working under a semi-ageless model. While you'll focus on adults of working age, you'll work closely with our Older Adults Consultant and other clinical colleagues to ensure joined-up care across the hospital.

This appointment is for a full time 1.0 WTE Fixed Term Consultant Psychiatrist who will be responsible for providing Liaison Psychiatry input to the Working Age Liaison Psychiatry Service in RSCH. This vacancy follows an expansion in the service and is a new role. This is an exciting opportunity to join the rapidly expanding Liaison Psychiatry services of Surrey & Borders NHS Foundation Trust. The directorate provides Liaison Psychiatry services within the five major district general hospitals in Surrey. There has been a considerable amount of focus & interest in Liaison services by commissioners, & the successful candidate will be joining the department at a crucial period of positive service development. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with managers on directly influencing the delivery of services to the Acute Hospital to suit local needs. Person specification

Essential

Full medical registration with a license to practice.
Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent
MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification
Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All)
Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others
Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and Specialty teams.
Knowledge of psychiatric provision
Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high- quality care
Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ.
A high-level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.

Desirable

Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
MRCPsych or equivalent
Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.
Published audit or research projects
Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment
Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
