About the role

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Vitreo-retinal surgery.

The post is based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road and Moorfields at St George's Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to cover surgical operating lists as the lead surgeon.

You will be responsible for the care and management of patients seen in your allocated VR/ VRE clinics and operating sessions. You will be required to participate in the VRE on call rota alongside the other consultants.

The successful applicant will have completed FRCOphth / MRCOphth and must be registered with the GMC. Applicants need to evidence demonstrable training and experience in all aspects of Vitreo-retinal work.

The post will be for 12 months from October 2026.

Main Responsibilities:

Responsibility for the care of Vitreo-retinal patients across admitted and non admitted pathways.

Participation in on call rota covering all aspects of Vitreo-retinal emergency work when needed.Managem

Person specification

Essential

FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
Full GMC Registration (with a 'License to Practise').
CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date).
Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry.
Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
Fellowship Training in vitreoretinal surgery
Relevant research methods training
Extensive knowledge of vitreoretinal conditions
Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education & the possible associated implications for Moorfields/UCL Institute of Ophthalmology
Teaching at postgraduate levels
Extensive experience in the management of all of patients with conditions requiring vitreoretinal clinical/surgical knowledge.
Experience of taking a leading role in a research group
Evidence of promoting excellence in areas of research
Extensive experience of working in a clinical and/or biomedical academic environment
Understanding of the key NIHR funding streams for research
High degree of clinical & surgical skills vitreoretinal surgery
Track record of developing and submitting applications for research funding
Track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific & clinical journals.
Ability to lead & co-ordinate clinical teams.

Desirable

Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).
Attended clinical leadership training
Received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
Clinical leadership and management experience in developing and delivering new services
Involvement in clinical leadership roles such a participation in QIPP projects & service improvement projects.
Management innovation experience
Results by effectively managing relationships with sponsors/funding bodies/collaborators/other university/hospital research groups
Ability to attract research funding
