About the role
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Geriatrician to provide maternity leave cover from February 2026 within the expanding Care of Older People team at Musgrove Park Hospital. The post offers a supportive, multidisciplinary environment with 17 consultant colleagues, strong links to community services, and opportunities to shape innovative models of frailty and older adult care. The role includes delivering specialist inpatient and outpatient geriatric medicine, contributing to front door frailty services, ortho geriatrics, dementia and delirium care, movement disorders, and liaison work with surgical, oncology, and cardiology teams. Teaching, clinical supervision, audit, and quality improvement are integral parts of the position, with additional SPA time available for educational roles. Subspecialty development is encouraged, particularly in frailty, dementia, heart failure, movement disorders, and surgical liaison. Provide specialist geriatric medical care across inpatient wards and outpatient clinics. Lead and contribute to key services, including: Front door frailty (ED and Acute Frailty Unit) Ortho geriatrics and osteoporosis Dementia and delirium care Parkinson's and movement disorder clinics Surgical, oncology, and cardiology liaison Subspecialty outpatient clinics Supervise and mentor junior doctors, including educational and clinical supervision, assessment, and appraisal. Participate in clinical governance, including audit, quality improvement, and service development. Engage in teaching, supporting medical students, trainees, and multidisciplinary colleagues. Take part in job planning, appraisal, and mandatory training as required by the Trust. Optional involvement in the GIM on call rota depending on experience and interest. Contribute to development of the frailty service, including the new 7day frailty model. Develop and pursue subspecialty interests aligned with departmental needs (e.g., heart failure, dementia, movement disorders, surgical liaison, stroke).
