About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaged and committed Fellow in environmentally sustainable anaesthesia to work in a specific role within the peri-operative and critical care directorate at the Freeman Hospital. This is a National Fellowship jointly organised between Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust, The Association of Anaesthetists and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and will involve working with all 3 organisations.

The aim of the fellowship is to improve the evidence base underpinning environmentally sustainable anaesthesia, establish what best practice looks like, define and remove barriers to best practice implementation and to share the findings with the wider anaesthetic and medical communities. All clinical work will be within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.

This post would suit anaesthetic trainees who have a special interest in sustainable healthcare. Applicants should have completed Foundation Training and Core/ACCS Anaesthetic training. This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for an ST or Consultant post.

Post is available from 5th August 2026 for 12 months.

The post will include clinical duties in critical care and anaesthesia and the successful individual will be expected to take part in the on call rota at a level suitable to their clinical experience.

The clinical component would be based between the anaesthetic department and the general critical care unit at the Freeman Hospital (FH) in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Freeman is within the Shelford Group and specialises in major surgery, solid organ transplantation and peri-operative medicine. The successful candidate could expect to gain experience in the following surgical specialities: Hepatobiliary, Vascular, Renal, Urology, ENT, Maxo-Facial, Orthopaedics and General Surgery.

Essential

Primary Medical Qualification.
Full GMC registration.
Satisfactory completion of Foundation Training (or equivalent).
Competent to work on suitable anaesthesia and critical care on call rotas
Primary FRCA
At least 2 years’ experience of working within the NHS
Good history & examination skills.
Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
Able to order appropriate investigations.
Image interpretation relevant to practice.
Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Ability to manage common medical emergencies.
Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments.
Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors.
Experience of audit projects.
Understanding of research principles.

Desirable

Relevant higher degree.
ALS/ATLS.
Full FRCA.
Experience and interest in the specialty.
Experience and interest in Sustainable Healthcare and environmental issues
Neat, legible writing of notes and charts.
Ability to perform basic general procedures relevant to anaesthesia and critical care
Proven management and administration ability.

Contribution to departmental training sessions.
