About the role

This post is designed for a Specialty Doctor who has obtained or are working towards their certificate of CCT training in Neurology.

We are pleased to invite applicants for this rare opportunity to apply for a post as a Specialty Doctor within Autonomics. The successful applicant will support the nationally and internationally recognized Autonomic Unit based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

The Autonomic Unit has pioneered the translation of autonomic research into clinical practice in the UK and worldwide, and is closely involved in national, European and international autonomic and neurological societies, and in International Consensus Groups and Task Forces providing guidelines and policy. Clinical Autonomic Scientists work along with the clinicians, to ensure that the clinical service is underpinned by a strong investigation and evidence base. They have devised and implemented new diagnostic tests for central and peripheral autonomic function, and novel treatments. They have pioneered novel, mainly non-invasive techniques for the investigation of pathophysiological mechanisms in various autonomic disorders.

The team has in the last 5 years established additional patients' pathway including the delivery of autonomic assessment, rehabilitation and immunotherapy one of the most severe but treatable autonomic failure condition, such as autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy. We have also established the first Autonomic adolescent service and a new diagnostic assessment for postganglionic sudomotor dysfunction. The expanded spectrum of patients seen at the Autonomic unit require additional senior specialist in autonomic neurology leading on the delivery of assessment and treatment of patients with autonomic failure.

Essential

Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise
A CCT in Neurology or working towards completion of training (CCT).
Applicants with equivalent overseas training will also be considered. Non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register or have confirmation that they are eligible for full GMC registration, by date of interview.
Experience of the management of patients with Autonomic diseases
Experience in leading multi-disciplinary team meeting and understanding of the different roles.
Management of associated comorbidities and multisystem disorders
Commitment to providing an efficient and effective service.
Demonstrate ability to meet Trust Values of safety, kindness, teamwork and improving.
Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
Ability to communicate clearly with one's colleagues on professional matters and in an interactive environment.
Interpersonal Skills: ability to see patients as people, ability to empathise and work co-operatively with others.
A demonstrable interest in research
Experience and interest in teaching doctors in training.
Demonstratable understanding of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion and/or Knowledge of the NHS obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duties
Being familiar with, and adhering to Trust policies and guidance on infection prevention and control.
Completing all required training and education (both via e-learning and face to face) on infection prevention and control.
Including infection prevention and control as an integral part of your continuous personal/professional development and included in your annual appraisal
Taking personal responsibility so far as is reasonably practicable, in helping ensure that effective prevention and control of health care associated infections is embedded into everyday practice and applied consistently.
Clinical Governance Management & IT

Desirable

A further qualification such as PhD or MRCP or equivalent
Understanding of the needs of people with complex conditions and learning disability
An understanding of patient centred care and self-care approach
Experience in interpretation of autonomic cardiovascular and sudomotor testing.
Ability and willingness to run a personal service and to explore and develop formal and informal contacts with the clinicians and GPs who use the service.
Accountability: ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
Experience and interest in teaching doctors in training.
