CONSULTANT IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE

FULL TIME Substantive Posts

We are delighted to invite applications for a substantive consultant post in Emergency Medicine at the Royal London Hospital.

The successful candidates will join a highly motivated, consultant led team delivering high quality emergency care to East London. The department receives a full range of emergencies from the local area, in addition to major trauma from North East London and Essex, with a total of 210,000 urgent and emergency patients seen each year.

Our multidisciplinary clinical team includes nurses, technicians, clinical practitioners, and physician associates working alongside resident doctors and consultants.

All of our team are dedicated to team well-being and the highest standards in clinical care and patient safety. The department has good working relationships with acute specialities, a friendly working atmosphere, a strong teaching programme and welcomes innovation.

The post includes clinical duties across all areas of the department including the resuscitation room, major trauma, major emergencies, injuries, virtual emergency care areas, SDEC and observation medicine for both adult and paediatric patients. Post holders will join a consultant team providing a 24/7 consultant presence ensuring the highest levels of emergency care.

The post’s core role is general emergency medicine. The department welcomes applicants with a specialist interest including but not confined to:

Ultrasound

We are looking to grow our ultrasound programme in the department and those with further qualifications in ultrasound practice, delivery and training would be supported to develop this structure.

Medical technology and Clinical AI

As AI is transforming our society and environment, we are committed to ensuring that our department invests in the appropriate skills and infrastructure to boost our adoption and productivity with AI. The department is currently piloting the use of ambient AI scribes and use of AI in rostering/allocations and would welcome an individual with this interest.

SDEC/EEMAC

Our department has a strong Specialty and Emergency SDEC. We have plans to build on this structure to include further pathways for improved UEC delivery.

Community Emergency Medicine

With strong associations to pre-hospital care with LAA and the PRU, we look to enhance our links with in- hospital and community teams to ensure our local population are delivered care in the right environment.

Direct clinical care of adult and paediatric patients across the full spectrum of emergency presentations

Supervising care provided by junior medical and non-medical staff

Providing shop floor teaching, advice and education to the clinical team

Reviewing and managing patients admitted to the department’s observation units and SDEC units

Supervising and contributing to Barts Health emergency telemedicine services and may include community outreach emergency medicine

Resus consultant receiving and managing major emergency calls and leading the resuscitation room team

Working with partners from across North East London to deliver integrated emergency care

Person specification

Essential

MB ChB or equivalent
FCEM or Equivalent (‘equivalence’ must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee)
ALS, ATLS, APLS and MIMMS provider or equivalent
Appropriate for level of experience
Ability to manage on-going medical and surgical critical care in the resuscitation room.
**12 months consultant experience in a Major Trauma Centre (Only required for substantive appointments)
Appropriate experience of clinical audit
Quality Improvement
Project leadership and attainment
Ability to participate fully in departmental research
Evidence of involvement in research projects
Team player
Working independently. Working under pressure.

Desirable

BSc/MSc
MRCP or equivalent additional higher qualification
Instructor status in more than one course
Evidence of appropriate Faculty Development towards Educational Supervision
Specific desirable criteria in this category;
Experience in leading POCUS and ECHO training programs in emergency care
Experience of leading Postgraduate teaching and training programs
Formal Medical Education Qualification

Experience in Ambulatory Medicine

Experience in Community Emergency Medicine

Experience in Health Care AI Tools

Leadership in SDEC

Evidence of previous participation in Clinical Governance activities
