About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a large, friendly and proactive Palliative Medicine Department at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. You will join a team of 10 Palliative medicine consultants based between Royal Derby Hospitals (RDH) and Queens Hospital Burton (QHB) who provide services at the associated community hospitals. The Specialist Palliative Care team, at UHDB provides support to patients and families in a variety of settings. Nightingale Macmillan Unit (NMU) (21 bed specialist palliative care inpatient unit) Ward 2 (15 bed palliative care ward providing end of life care) Hospital Palliative Care Team Community Palliative Care Team for Southern Derbyshire End of Life Care education team (hospital and community) The successful candidate will work within the consultant team in the Nightingale Macmillan Unit and will have the opportunity to provide a weekly outpatient clinic. The Palliative Medicine Consultant team have a flexible approach to our areas ofpracticeand the candidate will have opportunities to work in and lead other areas of the service over their career to ensure a broad experience and career development. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in a 1 in 10 on-call rota, contribute to the education programme, quality improvement activities and clinical supervision of junior doctors who work within the service. o Work with the wider Palliative Medicine team to support in-patients with symptom control, decision making for treatments and onward planning for discharge.

o To work on the Nightingale Macmillan Inpatient Unit providing specialist Palliative Care to patients.

o Conduct an outpatient clinic for Palliative Medicine patients

o To be a senior member of the inpatient multi-disciplinary team.

o To act as supervision and support for resident doctors and medical students.

o At specified times, be a point of contact for calls to the department for advice and referral, with awareness of bed states to ensure patients are cared for in the most appropriate place.

o To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

o To undertake continuing professional development (CPD) and comply with requirements for appraisal and revalidation.

o To work to achieve personal, departmental and Trust objectives.

o The post-holder will take part in the out of hours consultant on call rota.

o Contribute to leadership, management and service development of the wider Palliative Medicine department.

Person specification

Essential

Evidence and ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties
MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
GMC registration with a license to practise at time of application
Entry on GMC Specialist Register, or eligible for entry on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR if applying for Specialist Registration via Portfolio Pathway (Formerly CESR) be able to provide evidence of submission prior to interview
Evidence of independent clinical practice
Experienced in making clinical decisions & managing risk
Experience of managing and leading a clinical team
Experience of audit management
Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
Experience of teaching clinical skills
Experience of & Commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence based research into everyday clinical practice
Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the speciality

Desirable

Attended an Advanced Communications skills course
Postgraduate Qualification / Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to speciality
Evidence of attendance on a management/leadership course for consultants
Evidence of attendance on a formal recognised Teaching training course
Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
Recent experience in Palliative Medicine research and a desire to continue research
