About the role

This is a permanent role within the Haematology department, based at the West Suffolk Hospital. The department covers an area with a population of around 280,000 and offers a wide-ranging service including inpatient chemotherapy, bispecific antibody therapy for lymphoma and myeloma, and post CAR-T therapy follow up care. Our haemato-oncology diagnostic service (HODS) and regional MDTs are based at Cambridge University Hospitals. The department provides a BCSH Level 2a service. The post holder will have responsibility for patients with both malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions and will lead on the management of patients with haemostasis and thrombosis disorders. Our regional Haemophilia Comprehensive Care centre is Cambridge University Hospitals. The post holder will also provide clinical support for our UKAS accredited Haematology laboratory, in particular for haemostasis. All Consultants take responsibility for the ward inpatients on a pro-rata basis and participate in a 1:5 out of hours service with prospective cover.

Person specification

Essential

Entry on the GMC specialist register in Haematology or be within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training at the time of interview.
Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
FRCPath or equivalent
MRCP or equivalent.
Completion of approved JRCPTB curriculum in Haematology or evidence of equivalent knowledge, training and experience in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology practice.
Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of haematological problems
Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
Ability to organise and manage a Haematology service
Ability to manage and lead members of the multi-disciplinary team
Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Haematology
Experience in management of Haematology in-patient and out-patient medicine
Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a full spectrum of Haematology issues
Experience of supervising F1s, F2s and SpRs
Ability to teach clinical skills
Experience of workplace- based assessment
Experience in developing and delivering undergraduate teaching
Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the Haematology service
Ability to organise and manage day to day service delivery e.g. out-patient priorities
Ability to manage and lead strategic developments in service delivery
Experience of audit management
Good personal interactive communications skills: clarity of expression and purpose
Ability to work as a team member
Acceptance of management and administrative duties by working within a structured hospital team for the greater good
Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance
Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Publications in peer reviewed journals

Desirable

MD or PhD.
Experience of teaching basic clinic skills to undergraduates.
