About the role

Applications are invited for two Consultant Community Paediatrician posts - one to work full-time, and one to work 8 sessions per week - based at University Hospital Llandough Children's Centre and St David's Hospital Children's Centre. These substantive posts offer an exciting opportunity to join a well-established, experienced team within our Children, Young People & Family Health Services (CYPFSH) Directorate.

Post holders will provide clinical input to a range of community paediatric services across Cardiff and the Vale, including assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental conditions, neurodisability, and atypical development. There is also an expectation to contribute to the delivery of safeguarding medical assessments and multi-agency safeguarding work.

The service operates locality-based Consultant-led teams and works closely with colleagues in education, social care, CAMHS and the third sector. Clinics are delivered in children's centres, special schools, and community settings. The role includes participation in the safeguarding service week rota - in-hours only.

Applicants must hold MRCPCH or equivalent and should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum (pro rata as applicable).

Post holders will work as part of a Consultant-led team to deliver high-quality community paediatric care across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Clinical responsibilities include assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental conditions (including autism, ADHD, and global developmental delay), complex disability, and safeguarding concerns.

Work will be carried out across a range of sites including children's centres, special schools, and other community settings. The role involves active participation in multidisciplinary and multi-agency working, supported co-ordinated care through collaboration with education, social care, CAMHS, and third-sector partners.

There is a commitment to the safeguarding service week rota. When not undertaking safeguarding responsibilities, post holders will contribute to neurodevelopmental assessments and fulfil statutory responsibilities under the Children Act and the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice for Wales.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Person specification

Essential

On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date (Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
2 years General Professional Training in paediatrics
5 years Higher Specialist Training, including 3 years in Paediatrics
Experience in Safeguarding
Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
Effective and demonstrable communication skills
Knowledge of Child Protection, Safeguarding, Mental Health Act and Capacity Act
Sees patients within a holistic context
Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation
Ability to critically evaluate published research evidence to inform clinical practice
Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors
Familiarity with problem-based learning approaches
Commitment to teaching students and colleagues of all disciplines
Evidence of effective leadership skills

Desirable

Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or other higher degree
DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas
Experience in other areas relevant to child health e.g. general practice, child mental health, obstetrics, public health
Demonstrate additional abilities in one or more areas of speciality
Evidence of active research interests
