Thames House is a female Low Secure Unit in Oxford and serves a wide catchment area, providing secure inpatient placements to patients from Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Dorset.
Thames House consists of two wards, the 10 bedded acute ward, Kestrel, and a 16 bedded rehabilitation ward. Kingfisher.
Wenric ward is a male Low Secure Unit in Oxford and provides secure inpatient services predominantly to patients from Oxfordshire, but also from Buckinghamshire and Berkshire as well as occasionally Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Dorset.
The successful applicant will provide medical care for the psychiatric inpatients detained within the low secure environment at Littlemore. This will include psychiatric and physical health care, as supported and directed by primary care input particularly that arising from any particular areas of need for people with psychiatric difficulties, as well as additional needs. The patient group presents with the entire spectrum of disorders seen within Forensic Mental Health Services. Many of the patients will have difficulties in more than one of the areas of mental illness, personality disorder and substance abuse. Care is provided through a multi-disciplinary team approach under the leadership of Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists. All inpatients present with a significant risk to others which is usually associated with their psychiatric difficulties, necessitating placement within a secure psychiatric environment. They will frequently present with other challenging behaviours, which may pose a risk to themselves as well as others. This poses frequent management dilemmas, which require close communication and mutual support. This requires the clinical team to work closely together, with a high emphasis on relational security.
Patients’ pathways may be directly to the community, or through the pre-discharge unit in Oxford. Patients are generally discharged to their locality specialised community forensic team or to the general adult CMHTs, depending on risk.
Referrals are accepted from other secure units within the Thames Valley Forensic Mental Health Service and wider Provider Collaborative, the criminal justice system (courts, probation and prisons), and from general adult psychiatric services
In addition to this post the team at Thames House consists of two Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists, one part time Specialty Doctors, an inpatient social worker, two creative therapists, a part-time GP two Ward Managers, a Modern Matron, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Fitness Instructor, Administrator and Nursing complement.
