About the role

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Paediatric Surgeon to join the team in Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology at Birmingham Children's Hospital. This is a locum post, in the first instance but has the possibility of becoming substantive in 1 year. This post will be to provide paediatric surgery cover on an unselected on-call and to provide routine general paediatric surgery, and to work alongside Mr A Lander, Miss Anna Harris and Mr Ian Jones and in the colorectal team alongside the colorectal clinical nurse specialists and Physician Associate, and if the candidate does not have expertise in colorectal surgery now, to develop this interest and competence in post. Birmingham Children's Hospital is part of Birmingham Women & Children's NHS Foundation Trust. This comprises of 2 hospitals: Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH) and Birmingham Women's Hospital (BWH), and includes Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB) providing CAMHS care. The hospital covers a population of over 5 million and provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary services. It is a designated Paediatric Major Trauma centre. Paediatric Surgical service covers neonatal and general paediatric surgery, as well as gastroenterology, oncology, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, major trauma and non-cardiac thoracic surgery.

The Department of Paediatric Surgery & Urology is made up of 13 Consultant Surgeons, 13 Tier 2 clinicians, 3 Clinical Nurses Specialist teams and 3 Physician Associates. The Paediatric Urologists provide a service which encompasses all areas of Paediatric Urology practice except for Bladder Exstrophy / Epispadias.The Paediatric Urologists provide a separate Paediatric Urology on-call service to the Paediatric surgeons. This is a locum post in paediatric surgery. The successful applicant will be expected to have, or to develop, a subspeciality interest in Colorectal surgery (including anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and intestinal failure and support in the provision of these areas of practice. This is a 10 PA job, including both elective and on-call commitments. This post does not include the provision of any Specialist Paediatric Urology.

Person specification

Essential

FRCS(Paed) or equivalent or overseas equivalent.
Ability to manage full range of Paediatric Surgical cases.
Ability to take full responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Able to operate independently.
Advanced laparoscopy experience
Logbook to be available.
Portfolio to be available.
Ability to complete busy surgical on-call commitments.
Experience of resident doctor supervision
Definitive Trauma surgical skills course or equivalent
Independent practice for outpatient perioperative and operative management of neonatal and colorectal cases
Co-operative
Good at shared care
Good team member
Have leadership qualities
Good communication skills
Experience of supervising Registrar's and equivalent.
Ability to teach operative and clinical skills.
Has undertaken audit and completed an audit cycle
Evidence of research activity and presentations

Desirable

MD, PhD, MSc or equivalent
Post CCT Fellowship in Paediatric Colorectal Fellowship
Consultant experience within the UK.
Consultant Paediatric Surgery on-call experience within the UK.
Current APLS or equivalent
Sub-speciality interest and experience in lower GI/colorectal
Experience in vascular access
Experience in management of resident doctors at Core and higher surgical level; experience of management of trainees in trouble.

Evidence of membership of specialist organisations/groups e.g. BAPS

Pleasant and cheerful

Ability to supervise & take part in research / audit

Train the trainer qualification

Clinical Trials experience as associate PI/sub-PI/PI/CI

Evidence of achieving grant funding

In-vitro/in-vivo/ex-vivo research experience

First or senior author on paper published in peer reviewed literature with paediatric Colorectal Surgery.
