About the role

Barts Health NHS Trust Trust Doctor (eqv to ST3+) in Ophthalmology /Vitreoretinal Ophthalmology Fellow 12 month Fixed Term with possible extension August onwards We're currently searching for a driven ophthalmologist to join us as an Ophthalmology fellow. This role holds significant importance within our department, and we're looking for someone innovative and dedicated to fill it. The fellowship spans 12 months and offers thorough training in both medical and surgical aspects of managing complex Retina conditions. Situated in the bustling Eye Treatment Centre (ETC) at Whipps Cross Hospital, this role is ideal for candidates nearing completion or those who have finished the Higher Specialist Training programme (or its equivalent) in Ophthalmology. The schedule runs from Monday to Friday.

The Fellow will be exposed to all forms of complex medical and surgical retina care and will gain significant practical training in the management of related conditions including retinal laser, intravitreal injections and vitreoretinal surgery. Candidates should be in possession of Part 2 FRCOphth or equivalent. Suitably qualified candidates from overseas with appropriate GMC registration will be considered.

Person specification

Essential

Fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), UK.
Competent in intravitreal injections, with independently performed procedures under supervision.
Clinically competent in Argon PRP laser treatment
Competent in routine cataract surgery, with over 200 independent or supervised cases completed.
Previously participated in clinical trials as a sub investigator/research clinician, contributing to patient recruitment, data collection, and protocol adherence.
Evidence of academic output with publications in peer reviewed journals
Over 4 years of continuous ophthalmic clinical experience
Demonstrated leadership through supervising junior doctors and coordinating daily clinical workflow
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, ensuring safe communication, shared planning, and integrated patient management
Experienced in training junior doctors and allied health professionals through structured teaching sessions, supervision, and clinical skills training
Actively involved in clinical governance, including leading and completing clinical audits with measurable service improvements.
Excellent communication skills demonstrated through clear patient explanations, informed consent discussions, and collaborative team interactions.
Proficient in clinical IT systems, imaging software, and Microsoft Office applications.
Maintains clear, legible, and accurate clinical records

Desirable

Eligible for a higher degree or a Medical Retina Fellowship
GCP certified with documented understanding of ethical and regulatory standards for clinical research.
Competent in independently managing cataract surgery complications.
Competent in surgical management of ocular trauma and acute ophthalmic emergencies
Demonstrated experience with paperless electronic patient records, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant digital documentation
