About the role
This service provides nationally commissioned, specialist mental health care that is fully accessible to deaf children, young people and families. Deaf children and young people have historically had poor access to mainstream CAMHS who do not have experience and understanding of specific cultural, linguistic and developmental issues. Core features of the service include bilingual (British Sign Language (BSL)/English), bicultural practice with hearing and deaf staff working together. All staff who work within the service will be supported to access British Sign Language training and will be trained in deaf cultural competency. The national service operates as four regional community outreach teams Northern, Central, South West and London/South East. The northern service has teams in York, Manchester and Newcastle. There are consultant colleagues in each team. The Newcastle team has a base in Benton House and covers a region down to Middlesborough, up to the Scottish border and across the Cumbria. The service offers a flexible hybrid model of care, with in person clinics and remote appointments via secure telehealth platforms (e.g. Zoom, MS Teams). These are routinely used to minimise travel, reduce the service's carbon footprint, and support environmentally sustainable care, while maintaining equitable access for families across wide geographic areas. The neuro-developmental assessment clinics are held at Benton House.
