About the role
We are looking to appoint a Consultant in General Paediatrics with a focus on neonatal transition and paediatric surgical support at Nottingham Children's Hospital, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy and supportive General Paediatric service, working across neonatal, surgical and general paediatric pathways to improve care for children and young people who require joined up medical oversight. The post will strengthen consultant capacity for paediatric surgical ward support, neonatal transition ward rounds and multidisciplinary team working, alongside contribution to General Paediatric service weeks, outpatient activity, Advice and Guidance, and the consultant on-call rota. The successful candidate will work closely with paediatric surgery, neonates, anaesthetics, nursing, therapy teams, specialty colleagues, primary care and community partners to support safe, timely and coordinated care.
The appointee will contribute to General Paediatric service weeks, including ward rounds, assessment of acutely unwell children, clinical decision making, trainee supervision and liaison with multidisciplinary colleagues. The postholder will undertake General Paediatric outpatient clinics and associated clinical administration, ensuring timely correspondence, investigation follow-up and effective pathway management. The role will also include Advice and Guidance to support primary care and partner services, helping to reduce avoidable referrals and improve timely access to specialist paediatric advice. The successful candidate will participate in acute paediatric on calls, including evening shifts, unpredictable emergency work and weekend on call commitments, as set out in the final agreed job plan. They will also contribute to clinical governance, audit, incident review, risk management, teaching, supervision and service improvement, and will provide reciprocal cover for consultant colleagues within the agreed job plan and service requirements.
