About the role

The successful applicant will provide a specialist clinical service in General Plastic Surgery and Burns, with special interest in Hand surgery at the St Andrew's Centre, Broomfield Hospital and its satellite sites.

You will also conduct and lead clinically relevant research to improve patient outcomes that will utilize and foster collaboration between local and national university facilities, and the clinical forum at St. Andrew's Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns.

There is a well-stocked medical library with audio-visual teaching aids and a full time librarian. The library has a Medline facility. There is a thriving Postgraduate Medical Centre with regular clinical meetings and a general education programme.

All consultants are expected to take advantage of study leave to maintain and develop their clinical skills to comply with CME requirements.

The total clinical care of the patients referred to him/her, including all administrative duties associated with patient care, proper record keeping and good communications maintained with patients and their general practitioners.

Positive collaboration with colleagues to provide the effective clinical leadership for all the staff in the Plastic Surgery Service.

Multidisciplinary teamwork is envisaged as a key component of this. He/she will participate in out of hours consultant cover and in the cover arrangements during colleagues' annual/study leave.

Undertaking regular ward rounds.

Participate in clinical audit and in continuing professional education.

Supervision, teaching, training and professional development of the junior medical staff working in the service. Consultants are fully involved in developing a high standard of teaching of junior medical staff, nurses, and medical students and in designing and contributing to the process for establishment and approval of training posts for junior medical staff.

Maintaining standards of care for his/her service to the Medical Director, the Chief Executive and Chairman and the Board of the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust.

Person specification

Essential

MBBS or Equivalent
Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty
Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems
Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team.
Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff.
Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
Excellent written skills
Evidence of management experience or training.
Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist training.
Ability to manage and lead department.
Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
Ability to take responsibility and show evidence of leadership.
Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level.
Ability to travel between Trust sites

Desirable

Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent
Evidence of teaching activities undertaken as one to one, small group, anatomical and cadaveric dissections, and lectures to larger groups at regional or national level
Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal.
Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
