About the role

Applications are invited for a whole time Consultant Neurologist post providing exciting opportunities in the care of people with Epilepsy and also additional opportunities for clinical research in epilepsy. The post will be based on the John Radcliffe Hospital site. Sessions will be divided between general clinical neurology with a specialist interest in epilepsy. This is a substantive 10 PA post (8.5 Direct Clinical Care, 1.5 Supporting Professional Activity). The appointee will join the established OUH Epilepsy team, working closely with the specialist nurses. The appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call rota and may be required to work on any other site as required by the OUH Trust in the future. The postholder's duties will cover the breadth of service provision across several fields: Clinical The post-holder will be expected to perform at the level of a Consultant Epileptologist at a tertiary Hospital. They will run their own epilepsy clinics, supervise an SPR led first seizure clinic, and work closely with the Epilepsy Specialist Nursing team. The post-holder will be expected to work patients up for resective surgery, intracranial recording, and neuromodulatory therapies. The postholder will be an active part of epilepsy-related MDT meetings. They will cover in-patients on the video-telemetry unit and help in the management of complex epilepsy patients across OUHFT. They will be required to integrate closely with the wider epilepsy team, which includes neurophysiologists, neuropsychologists, neuropsychiatrists, neurosurgeons, ward nursing, technologists, secretarial teams and multiple aligned health professionals. The postholder will also be on the general neurology on-call rota. Research The successful candidate will be well supported in both clinical and academic aspects by the current Epilepsy Consultants and established research infrastructure.

Essential

General training in Neurology to specialist level or equivalent.
Work with specialist nurses
Experience of clinical audit
Clinical training in outpatient clinics and inpatient care
Previous general neurology on call
As a specialist registrar or higher
Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
Excellent leadership skills.
Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda
Excellent knowledge base of neurology, particularly movement disorders
Wide clinical experience in neurology and neurology applied to general medicine
Appreciation and understanding of the role of management in the modern NHS
Computing skills and familiarity with electronic patient record/ voice dictation of clinical letters
Excellent communication skills with patients and colleagues
Proven ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, respecting diverse professional perspectives and supporting collaborative decision-making
Excellent personal and interpersonal skills. Excellent spoken and written English
Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
Clinical governance awareness and audit
A proven track record to undertake direct original clinical research in the neurosciences
A track record of proven ability in original clinical research related to epilepsy, supported by relevant peer-reviewed publications, competitive grant funding or other indicators of research standing at a national or international level.
Experience of teaching undergraduate and trainees
MRCP or equivalent
CCT in Neurology or Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Neurology (or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview)
Full GMC registration and licence to practice

Desirable

Experience in movement disorders MDT meetings
Senior-level experience in managing Parkinson's
Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
Evidence of leadership outside of the NHS.
Management qualification.
Ability to use word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser
Track record of managing complex stakeholder relationships, e.g. with hospital management, primary care partners, and community nurses/healthcare services
Evidence of recent 360 degree feedback
