About the role

This is a full-time substantive post for the vacancy of Consultant Intensivist and Anaesthetist based at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to clinical and educational activities within the directorates, as determined by the Consultants within the team, and provide a high-quality service to the local population, including an emergency on-call commitment.

All Consultant Intensivists are expected to provide the initial assessment, treatment, and stabilisation of critically unwell children from birth to age sixteen, whilst awaiting transfer to a tertiary centre by the Regional Paediatric Transfer Service. The on-call Anaesthetic and Critical Care Team also provide the initial assessment of critically ill children in collaboration with the Paediatric Consultants. Consultants are always supported by their colleagues throughout the management of paediatric cases.

There will be hot weeks from Monday to Thursday and hot weekends Friday to Sunday, this is currently one in eight which requires day time weekday and weekend working. Each shift is 12.5 hours and is resident from 08:00 to 20:30. All Consultant Intensivists are expected to be able to provide emergency anaesthesia and in the absence of regular theatre sessions, there is support for some Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) sessions to be undertaken in theatres for skills maintenance. The postholder will be required to co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services and expected to share with all colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

Person specification

Essential

Full GMC Specialist Registration or obtaining CCT within 6 months from date of interview
CCT in ICM as described by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (or evidence of equivalent levels of experience/training)
Extensive experience in critical care relevant for the post
Experience in teaching, training and supervising medical students, doctors and AHPs
Competence in management of acute illness and injury in both adults and children
Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
Leadership skills appropriate to participating in and leading a multidisciplinary critical care team
Able to delegate appropriately
Ability to relate to patients and Colleagues
Proven commitment to personal professional development
Evidence of participation in clinical audit
Able to teach and support staff effectively
Able to work with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary team
Empathy and sensitivity: ability to listen, understand and involve people; see people as individuals
Ability to undertake on-call including nights
Commitment to continuing personal development and medical education
Ability to travel to meet the needs of the service

Desirable

CCT in Anaesthesia as described by the Royal College of Anaesthesia (or evidence of equivalent levels of experience/training).
FFICM examination or other professional or higher qualification
Higher Degree (MD/MSc)
Higher qualifications in teaching or management
Formal teaching qualification or Instructor status for a relevant course on acute care or the deteriorating patient e.g. ALS/ ATLS
Post graduate qualification in medical education
Formal Mentor status for FUSIC module(s)
Capable of being General Anaesthetist on-call for our DGH patients including our paediatric and obstetric population

Formal accreditation in Point of Care Ultrasound

Able to develop, present and implement coherent ideas for service development/delivery

Presentations and/or publications in critical care

Enthusiasm to take a lead role in clinical development

Ability to speak Welsh or willingness to learn the Welsh Language
