About the role

The Locum Consultant will join the regional Children's Heart Unit at the University Hospital of Wales, providing specialist paediatric cardiology services for children and families across South and Mid Wales. This full-time locum post (10 sessions: 9 Direct Clinical Care and 1 Supporting Professional Activity) is a maternity leave cover within the Children & Women's Services Clinical Board. The post holder will deliver high-quality inpatient, outpatient and outreach care, including the assessment, diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired heart conditions. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team of consultant cardiologists, specialist nurses and allied health professionals, they will contribute to safe, effective and patient-centred services. The role includes close collaboration with Bristol Children's Hospital and other tertiary partners. Responsibilities include outpatient clinics, inpatient reviews, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities. The successful candidate will support teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff and contribute to the ongoing development of paediatric cardiology services across the region. Participation in the 1:6 on-call rota is required. The Locum Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist will provide specialist paediatric cardiology services across Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the wider South and Mid Wales region. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of children with congenital and acquired heart disease, delivering care in outpatient, inpatient and outreach settings. Key responsibilities include undertaking outpatient clinics, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings and specialist cardiac investigations, while working closely with consultant colleagues, specialist nurses and tertiary partners, including Bristol Children's Hospital. The successful candidate will contribute to the supervision, training and development of junior medical staff and participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. They will also support clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research activities to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and evidence-based care. The post holder will participate in the 1 in 6 consultant on-call rota and provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave. They will be expected to contribute to service development, maintain professional standards through continuing professional development and work collaboratively across regional cardiac networks to improve outcomes for children and young people with heart disease.

Person specification

Essential

Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise. On Specialist Register for Paediatric Cardiology / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR(CP) due within 3 months of interview date / On Specialist Register for Paediatrics with evidence of equivalent training and experience to the level of a UK-based consultant paediatric cardiologist
MRCP / MRCPCH or equivalent
Training and expertise in paediatric echocardiography
Consultant level Paediatric Cardiology experience
Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
Counselling and communication skills
Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
Evidence of engagement with revalidation
Active participation in research
Commitment to participating in and understanding of the management process
Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors
Evidence of ability to work both in a team and alone
