About the role

The Specialty posts in the Emergency Department are substantive joining a Middle Grade tier of twelve Specialty Doctors and eight Specialty Registrars. The posts will attract a basic payment of 10 Programmed Activities. There may be the opportunity for up to 2 additional activities being available which can be agreed as appropriate with the successful candidates. The additional PAs will be reviewed annually. The Department is open 24 hours a day and the workload is not always predictable.

The duties of the Specialty doctor are those of a doctor functioning at the middle grade level within the department. Primary duties include the initial diagnosis, resuscitation and overall clinical management of all patients arriving to the A&E Department. Appropriate follow-up, referral for admission, transfer or discharge to GP's care is an important part of the work along with liaison with colleagues in the community, i.e. GP's, Health Visitors, and District Nurse for the proper continuity of care.

Entry on GMC Specialist Register
Medical degree
MRCEM part A/FRCEM Primary
2 up to date life support qualifications
Appropriate level of clinical knowledge in Emergency Medicine
NHS Experience in an employed capacity
4 years postgraduate experience
2 years in emergency medicine or a relevant specialty
Minimum 12 months emergency medicine experience
Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job
Clinical judgment: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job
Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job
Clinical governance: Capacity to be alert to dangers or problems. Demonstrates awareness of good decision making
Aware of own limitations
Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors.
Audit: evidence of active participation in audit
Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate level
Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
Ability to motivate and develop training medical staff
Ability to work independently as well as part of the Emergency Medicine CSU
To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and the Trust as a whole
Demonstration of immunisation against Hepatitis B plus proof of HbsAg negative status
Will be required to maintain full registration with the GMC
Able to appraise research
Understanding of Evidence Based Medicine
Thorough understanding of the principles of audit

Postgraduate Qualification/Diploma e.g. MRCEM, MRCP, MRCS
ATLS/ALS/ APLS or EPLS Instructor
