About the role

A whole-time/part-time post as consultant in Cardiology is available now based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospital.

The appointment is on a whole-time/part-time basis but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will receive serious consideration.

The postholder’s duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital with coronary lab activity at Milton Keynes University Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

OUHFT is a large tertiary cardiac centre serving a population of 2.5 million that undertakes approximately 1300 PCI procedures including 350 PPCIs and approximately 500 TAVIs per annum.

The successful applicant will support the ongoing development of the established invasive coronary service, and the growth of a coronary network to consolidate regional services. They will help to provide a non-emergency weekend coronary invasive service to support rollout of a pathway for acute admissions.

There is a growing need for further consolidation of coronary invasive service across the referring centres and this appointment will have a role for strengthening these links by attending local MDT’s and provision of specialist clinics for complex cases.

All consultant cardiologists participate in a consultant of the week rota for general cardiology, currently approx. 1 in 16 weeks. On these occasions the consultant is released from morning fixed commitments to undertake CCU ward rounds, email advice line and this commitment is reviewed periodically and may change following consultation.

Clinical

The Interventional Cardiology Department is one the highest volume PCI centres in the UK undertaking the whole range of coronary interventional procedures.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through annual appraisal and revalidation. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. The appointee will be mentored by a named senior Consultant.

Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides integrated cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services for health authorities in the Oxford region and for a number of health authorities in neighbouring regions. The population served is approximately 2.5 million.

The successful applicant will join existing consultant cardiology colleagues who provide comprehensive secondary and tertiary care services. The NHS Department works closely with the University Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, with academic medical staff and NHS consultants working across both Departments. Academic interests cover myocardial hypertrophy, vascular biology, and cardiac CT and MRI.

The Cardiology Department provides a local service to Oxfordshire and surrounding counties as the local district general hospital, as well as offering a tertiary service for interventional cardiology. Good relations with colleagues in neighbouring district general hospitals ensures a flow of both elective and emergent referrals.

Essential

Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology or CCT in Cardiology within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
Fully trained in Coronary Intervention
Full registration and licence to practise
Elective and acute PCI including PPCI Structural Cardiology including TAVI
Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
Ability to contribute to long-term development and success of the service
