About the role

The Consultants support the team in the delivery of the routine ENT surgery workload and share duties with the current team of consultants for the provision of ENT surgical services for the local population. The department offers a full Head and Neck and Thyroid cancer service, delivered by two specialist Head and Neck surgeons and a two specialist Thyroid surgeon within the Trust, offering both Transoral Robotic and Transoral Endoscopic surgery. The service is supported by the full range of allied surgical specialties including Reconstructive Plastic surgeons, Maxillofacial surgeons, and Neurosurgical and Cardiothoracic surgeons. In addition, the multi-disciplinary team is supported by colleagues from North Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The MDTs provide specialist cancer care for the Northeast Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Alliance which covers a population of approximately 1.1 million.

There is an ongoing Head and Neck and Thyroid research Programme overseen by Professor John Greenman in the Daisy Building and Hull University.

To provide, with the other members of the ENT Consultant body, routine and emergency ENT services to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and cover for annual, study and professional leave.

Person specification

Essential

• Full Registration with the GMC
•FRCS (ORL-HNS)
•Completion of higher training (CCT or within 6 months of obtaining) or CESR
• Ability to offer sound clinical opinion on range of acute medical conditions
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
•Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams
•Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
• Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
•Experience of supervising junior medical staff
•Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
•Evidence of participation in audit
•Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients
•Ability to work flexibly in a changing health service
•Excellent manner with patients, being sensitive to their needs and fears
•Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals and flex style as appropriate
•Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels

Desirable

• Postgraduate qualification in Education
• Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery
