About the role
To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring respiratory and acute medical services, both as in- and outpatients, as outlined in the proposed programme. To organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in Musgrove Park Hospital in conjunction with Dr James Gagg, Associate Medical Director (Medicine). Except in emergencies, or where otherwise agreed with your manager, you are responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in your Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time. You are responsible for the associated duties set out in the Terms and Conditions of Service. You will be expected to participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency cover and to provide enhanced medical / respiratory support to the hospital. When not on an on-call rota, we may, in exceptional circumstances, ask you to return to site for emergencies if we are able to contact you. You are not, however, required to be available for such eventualities. Where emergency recalls of this kind become frequent, we will review the need to introduce an on-call rota.
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Consultant Respiratory Physician with a specialist interest in lung cancer and pleural medicine to join the Somerset Lung Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital. The department provides comprehensive respiratory care, including outpatient clinics across the county, a busy inpatient respiratory unit with a Level 2 Respiratory Support Unit, and an expanding Respiratory@Home virtual ward service. The post supports a well established lung cancer pathway, delivering over 250 new diagnoses and more than 300 diagnostic procedures each year, including EBUS and medical thoracoscopy, with strong MDT input from oncology, radiology, pathology and thoracic surgery. The role includes general respiratory and acute medical duties, participation in the oncall rota, and opportunities to develop subspecialty interests aligned with service needs. The department has a strong teaching, audit and research culture, supporting medical students, trainees and clinical studies across multiple respiratory subspecialties. Somerset offers a supportive consultant body, excellent training reputation, and an attractive living environment with ongoing investment in hospital facilities. The final job plan will balance ward work, clinics, diagnostics, MDT commitments, administration and SPA time.
