About the role

ESNEFT is seeking an experienced Radiotherapy Physicist to provide leadership of the Radiotherapy Physics service at Colchester Hospital, under the overall responsibility of the Head of Service. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking for a new career challenge by moving up to Consultant level and further developing their leadership skills.

ESNEFT is one of the largest radiotherapy providers in the East of England, delivering services across Colchester and Ipswich hospital sites. Predominantly based in Colchester, you will be responsible for the day to day delivery of the service, managing a small, friendly team of clinical scientists, engineers and dosimetrists.

Colchester has recently completed a full equipment replacement programme and is equipped with multi-modality Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators, Halcyon and Hypersight imaging. Treatment planning is undertaken on the Varian Eclipse system integrated with ARIA patient management system. The department has a dedicated CT scanner and access to MR for radiotherapy planning. Gynae brachytherapy is delivered on a HDR system and the department has an orthovoltage treatment unit.

Essential

Master’s degree in an area of Medical Physics or equivalent level of specialist knowledge
HCPC registered Clinical Scientist
Inclusion on RPA2000 list of Medical Physics Experts
Expert knowledge of all aspects of external beam radiotherapy physics including technologically advanced planning and treatment
Extensive knowledge and experience to act as Medical Physics Expert under IR(ME)R17 within the field of radiotherapy
Specialist training and practical experience in dosimetry and quality control of radiotherapy treatment and ancillary equipment
Ability to act as an Operator under IR(ME)R17
Broad advanced knowledge of other areas of medical physics
Specialised knowledge of wider clinical issues and their implications for radiotherapy
High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
Knowledge of employment procedures and practices to a level appropriate for supervising individuals or small groups of staff
Ability to prioritise and manage own work
Ability to exercise initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence
Understanding of leadership qualities in a healthcare setting
In depth knowledge and understanding of all relevant legislation, standards, guidelines and safety principles relating to radiotherapy
Experience of provision of radiation protection advice in a radiotherapy setting
Knowledge of governance issues including ethical and regulatory considerations
Detailed knowledge of risk management systems
Understanding of incident reporting pathways (internal and external) in the context of radiotherapy
Ability to design and implement clinical and service audits
Experience of supervising STP / Route 2 physics trainees
Experience of training a wide range of professionals
Ability to identify relevant areas for R&D focus
Involvement in randomised controlled clinical trials

Membership of relevant professional body
