About the role
This is an exciting opportunity within Respiratory Medicineideally suited to trainees seeking valuable experience in Respiratory Medicine, Acute Medicine, Critical Care, Anaesthetics, and Intensive Care, providing excellent exposure to the management of acutely unwell respiratory patients. The post is based within the Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) and involves working Monday to Friday, 09:0017:00, with all five working days spent in RCU. The RCU is an eight-bedded specialist unit caring for critically ill respiratory patients requiring advanced respiratory support. The unit has the facilities and expertise to manage patients receiving:
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) Tracheostomy ventilation High-Flow Nasal Oxygen (HFNO) therapy
There is a daily consultant-led ward round, and trainees are expected to participate fully in the morning round alongside the consultant. Following the ward round, the trainee will remain based in RCU, undertaking tasks arising from the post-take ward round, reviewing patients, and contributing to ongoing patient management.
Trainees will be expected to conduct an afternoon patient review (mini-round), provide updates to relatives where appropriate, and discuss their assessments and management plans with the RCU consultant. Consultants also review referrals to the unit each afternoon, and trainees may have the opportunity to participate in the assessment of patients being considered for admission to RCU, gaining valuable experience in referral management and clinical decision-making. In addition to clinical duties, trainees will be expected to undertake Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs) and/or clinical audits. There will also be opportunities to become involved in research projects in collaboration with the Barnsley Hospital Research Department, providing valuable experience in clinical research and service development.
