About the role

The orthopaedic department sits within the Surgical and Women’s Health (SWNS) division. This is a busy DGH with approximately 2000 inpatient episodes per year made up of 1500 elective & 600 non elective. There are 21,000 new and follow up outpatient appointments per year.

There are 3 Day Surgery Theatres and these allow more specialist upper limb surgery to be done as day cases. There are 2 laminar air flow theatres where the majority of the orthopaedic operations are performed. The candidate is also expected to make use of the minor operating suite for local anaesthetic cases. The job also has assigned operating list at BHOC (Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre) as part of joint working within the ICS.

The trust has recently completed the construction of 2 further dedicated laminar flow capable theatres and a dedicated 12 bed elective ward with the expectation of orthopaedic utilisation within Q2/ Q3 of 2026.

There is currently a 1:10 On call rota where surgeons perform on call commitments within a TSOW Trauma Surgeon of the Week Model. The frequency is expected to drop within the next 12 months as further colleagues are recruited as planned expansion.

There will be an average of 8 PAs of direct clinical care (including out of hours and on call work), and 2 PAs allocated for supporting professional activities (audit, admin, teaching and CPD). As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality, safe health care to patients. The post will be based at Homerton University Hospital with cross site working at the SLG Centre in Stratford and the BHOC Centre in Newham. This post will work with other orthopaedic colleagues and be part of the trauma and orthopaedic team at the Homerton Hospital. This post is part of the strategic plan to build on the success of our sports medicine and orthopaedic unit.

Expertise is required within both Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic surgery, and this will include training in all aspects of hand and wrist surgery.

Person specification

Essential

• Full GMC Registration • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via Ø CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview Ø CESR or Ø European Community Rights • An appropriate higher – [specialty e.g. ‘Orthopaedic’] surgical qualification
Clinical training and wide range of experience in orthopaedics and trauma Completion of a post CCT fellowship scheme in hand and wrist surgery. Experience in modern hand and wrist surgical techniques . Experience of teaching and training of junior staff, medical students Experience and training to achieve excellent clinical skills
Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need. Familiar with current structure of the health service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates Understanding of the importance of good clinical coding

Desirable

Post-graduate doctorate (e.g. PhD or MD)
Management experience Equivalent two years within orthopaedics dealing with specialist hand & wrist surgery. Evidence of high volume Trauma surgery Has knowledge of maintaining high clinical standards in the management of an Orthopaedic Service. Upper Limb/Hand complex trauma experience or fellowship
