About the role

Applications are invited to for the post of Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with an interest in Gynaecological Oncology to join our friendly and supportive team at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern District General Hospital has approx. 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 that increases considerably in the summer months. Services included in the department at the present time are, obstetrics - general and specialist clinics, (level 1 neonatal services), general gynaecology, urogynaecology, cancer services, colposcopy services, fertility clinics, termination of pregnancy services, paediatric gynaecology service. Our main tertiary centre is at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital 26 miles from the James Paget University Hospital. The University of East Anglia is our medical school. Medical students come in years 1 and 4 to our department.

There are around 1,800 births each year at James Paget.

The post holder will share the Obstetric and Gynaecology workload with Consultant colleagues, including out-of-hours responsibilities with a Consultant on-call rota.

The weekday on call commitments are currently 1:12, with 1:10 cover at weekends. The frequency of on call will be reviewed by the team once we have recruited into the additional posts and potentially plan to move to 1:14 weekdays and 1:12 weekends. O&G advice will be given to our colleagues in other specialities as required. Governance, CPD and teaching will also be significant parts of the post holders duties.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified specialist to actively contribute to a modern Obstetric & Gynaecological service within this highly regarded Trust. We have a wide range of acute and community services, and the post will afford high levels of professional visibility.

The hospital is situated in Gorleston, 200 metres from the beach and picturesque countryside, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border close to the towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft and within commuting distance from several small villages with affordable housing and local amenities. Residents enjoy a good quality of life with easy access to the Norfolk Broads and unspoilt coastline with opportunities for wildlife, walking, cycling and sailing. The historic city of Norwich is only 20 miles with excellent schools, rail links to London and an international airport, for easy access to the Continent and beyond.

Our Trust is also on the path towards developing a new hospital over the coming years, working closely with the Department of Health and Care to deliver a modern, innovative health and care campus on our current site as part of the national New Hospital Programme.

Person specification

Essential

MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
MRCOG or equivalent
Hold a certificate or being within 6 months of completion of training or being on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.
Full GMC Registration
Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty of General Obstetric and Gynaecology
Ability to exhibit leadership and management skills and participate in developments within the division
Willingness to participate in and lead a multi-disciplinary team, balancing department and personal objectives
RCOG Advanced Labour ward practice ATSM or equivalent
Ability to manage obstetrics and emergency Gynaecology independently
Experience in High Risk Pregnancy
Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
Knowledge of using evidence base medicine to support decision making
Awareness and respect for colleagues, patients and relatives' dignity, privacy, integrity, cultural and religious beliefs
Energy and Enthusiasm and an ability work under pressure

Desirable

MD/PhD
Experience of committee work/project management
Experience in leading preterm prevention one stop clinic
Experience in conducting service development projects in Obstetrics
Experience in leading multidisciplinary management of mental disorders in pregnancy.
Participate in the TOP service
Advanced laparoscopic surgical skills
Involvement in research projects and published papers

Ability to travel to meet the requirements of the post
