About the role

We are seeking to recruit a motivated and forward thinking Consultant to join our ENT and Head-Neck Surgery Consultant team. This is a new permanent post with 10 programmed activities (PA's) to expand the service and support Elective Recovery. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) who are on the full General Medical Council's Specialist Register in Otolaryngology, Head-Neck Surgery with a license to practice, or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. In addition applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are fully trained in general Otolaryngology with a wide experience, in both adult and paediatric Otology. The applicant will preferably have obtained a fellowship in Otology.

The successful applicant will join our growing team of 8 consultant ENT surgeons delivering elective and emergency care including contributing to a 1 in 8 emergency non-resident on-call rota (moving to a 1 in 10 subject to recruitment). This is a 10PA job and the appointee will be expected to deliver elective activity cross site. Birmingham Treatment center is the main site for outpatient elective activity and day case surgery. MMUH is the admitting site for on-call, paediatrics and inpatient lists. Some outpatient clinics are also run at the Sandwell site. The successful candidate will be supported to develop and progress the otology service. The team is further supported by an excellent Audiology Department.

Person specification

Essential

Entry on the Specialist Register in Otolaryngology (or CCT expected within 6 months from the date of interview)
FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent
Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in ENT with a wide experience in Otology
Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute ENT emergencies and the care of elective ENT patients
Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team
Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
Experience of conducting clinical audit
Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making
Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines
The ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff
Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
An awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues.
Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to ENT
Energy and enthusiasm and the ability to work under pressure
An enquiring and critical approach to work
Caring attitude to patients
Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, other staff and agencies.
Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development
Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
Appropriate Immigration Status (where appropriate)
An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
Residence within a reasonable distance of MMUH
Ability to undertake clinical commitments at any of the Trust's sites.
