Locally Employed Doctor (equivalent to ST7+) – Tier 2 rota

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Specialist Doctor in Neurosurgery (ST7 +), to work at Higher level within the Neurosurgery Department, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The successful doctor will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, which is one of the busiest hospitals in the UK. In the financial year 2022/23 the Neurosurgery department treated: 246-day cases, 1052: elective cases and 1235: emergencies. Outpatient activity over the same period included: 4426 new and 14,700 follow-up patients. The hospital has been designated as a level one trauma unit, leading to increased emergency work in the department. QEHB already has special expertise in the management of all forms of trauma, through its links with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) located in the hospital.

The post will provide advanced clinical and operative experience across the breadth of adult neurosurgery, with opportunities for progressive independent operating and development of a subspecialty. Although this is not a formal Deanery training post, the clinical and educational structure should, wherever practicable, mirror the opportunities, supervision and professional development expected for a senior UK neurosurgical trainee. The successful applicant will be expected to function at senior registrar level and undertake responsibility appropriate to their demonstrated competencies. Duties will include: *Assessment and management of elective and emergency neurosurgical patients. *Participation in the senior neurosurgical on-call rota. *Senior review and decision-making for patients referred to the neurosurgical service. *Assessment and initial management of the unselected emergency neurosurgical take. *Supervision and support of junior medical staff. *Participation in consultant-led ward rounds and multidisciplinary decision-making. *Attendance at outpatient clinics and specialist MDT meetings. *Participation in elective and emergency operating lists. *Progressive responsibility for operative procedures according to demonstrated competence and appropriate consultant supervision. *Pre-operative assessment, consent, peri-operative management and postoperative follow-up of neurosurgical patients.
