About the role
Evans ward is a 15-bed inpatient unit, which provides psychiatric care for men, aged 18-65, with acute mental health problems who live in the London Borough of Lewisham. The ward is based at the Ladywell unit on the University hospital Lewisham site. In addition to this ward, the Ladywell unit has two other general adult male wards (Clare and Powell wards) , two female general adult ward (Wharton and Virginia Woolf wards), one male PICU (Johnson Unit) and various community services including the Lewisham Home Treatment team, enabling very close working between teams. This promotes good levels of peer support from several consultant colleagues on a daily basis as well as facilitating consultant cover and makes it easy for consultants to find nominal cover during periods of leave. There is a female PICU and other male PICU's located in other parts of the trust which Lewisham patients can access. The ward is a newly designed ward which is going to be a specialist ward for service users who are having their first admission. While many might be experiencing a first episode of psychosis, the service will be transdiagnostic and so will also receive service users with other diagnoses. As a result this is a unique ward which will be an exciting prospect for an ambitious and motivated applicant to develop and shape the service. The service will need to provide a thorough assessment of the service users needs including establishing a diagnosis and treatment plan. The cohort is likely to be younger than on a standard acute ward, and there would be scope for addressing social, educational and employment needs of the service users, and the ward has input from a band 6 OT, and a consultant psychologist to support this. The ward is smaller in size (15 beds) than the other wards at Ladywell, though has the same medical and nursing staffing levels, again to provide an enhanced offer for the service users on this ward. For more details of the model please feel free to contact the Associate Medical director, Dr Hugh Williams who will be happy to discuss. For further details, please refer to attached JD
