About the role

Cardiac surgical procedures undertaken at LHCH range from more routine cardiac surgical operations including CABG and valve surgeries to complex cardiovascular and ACHD surgery. We additionally anaesthetise patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures including TAVI, other structural procedures including for ACHD and electrophysiological procedures.

Individual fellowships will be planned according to the level of experience of the candidate. Appointed clinical fellows can expect to gain experience in elective management of patients with coronary artery and valvular heart disease presenting for on and off pump cardiac surgery, those requiring major aortic and aortovascular surgery and adult congenital heart disease surgery. .

Clinical Fellows in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia will also be supported to gain experience of the elective management of patients presenting for thoracic surgical procedures via thoracotomy, video-assisted thoracoscopy and robotically. There will be opportunities to gain experience of the management of patients undergoing procedures involving a shared airway, including rigid bronchoscopy for management of benign and malignant disease. Training in performance of regional anaesthetic techniques for the chest wall will also be provided.

**The role is initially 6 months with the option to extend to 12 months**

Successful candidates will initially undertake clinical work in the theatre and critical care setting, supervised by the consultant staff of the department in proportion to their experience and the complexity of the procedures, in a similar manner to rotating specialty trainees. Additionally, candidates will be expected to initially form part of our current resident on-call rota, providing out of hours cover within critical care and also across the wider hospital including the catheter lab.

Progress will be monitored with support of the educational supervisor and departmental leads, and it is expected that increasing independence will be gained in management of patients presenting for elective surgery and that on call and service provision duties will then also be reviewed in line with this.

Peri-operative management of patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic, aortic and cardiology procedures including pre-operative assessment and post-operative management in the critical care.

Person specification

Essential

MBChB, MBBS or equivalent
Primary FRCA or equivalent
Be eligible for full registration with and hold a current license to practice from the GMC from the intended start date
Be eligible to work in the UK
3 years in Anaesthesia
Experience of Intensive Care Medicine – at least 6 months
Willingness to participate in the education of junior colleagues and other team members
Willingness to participate in managerial activity
Evidence of ability to work as part of a team, particularly in stressful situations

Desirable

UK Resus Council ALS Course
Experience in other relevant allied clinical specialties
TOE/TTE experience
Experience, supported by evidence, of teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and related professionals
Evidence of good teaching practice or formal training in education.
Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit, quality improvement and clinical risk management.
Experience, supported with evidence, in clinical guideline development
Evidence of previous managerial/leadership roles
