About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic, values-driven Consultant Psychiatrist for a distinctive clinical academic opportunity with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, working in partnership with the University of Birmingham. The post has been designed to bring senior clinical leadership in early psychosis together with meaningful, protected academic time, enabling the successful candidate to translate research and innovation into improvements in patient care. This full-time 10 PA role comprises up to 6 PAs of permanent clinical consultant activity within the Early Intervention Service and 4 PAs of academic activity with the Mental Health Mission Midlands Translational Centre on a 24-month fixed-term basis. There may be scope to increase the academic commitment during this period, subject to agreement between the clinical and academic teams and provided the clinical needs of the service continue to be met. As a Senior Clinical Research Fellow, the post holder will have the opportunity to strengthen links between clinical practice and translational research, helping to develop research-active services, improve access to innovative studies and generate evidence that can shape future mental health care across Birmingham and Solihull.

The post holder will provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, formulation and management plans for people under the care of the Early Intervention Service, providing senior clinical decision-making, risk management and shared clinical leadership within a recovery-focused multidisciplinary team. They will work collaboratively with service users, families, carers, primary care and partner organisations to deliver safe, inclusive and person-centred care, and will support effective transitions into, within and out of services, including liaison with wider Trust and community pathways. The post holder will also lead and support research activity within the Mental Health Mission Midlands Translational Centre, including study delivery, clinical trials, research governance, recruitment to studies, dissemination, publications, service evaluation, audit and future grant development. They may act as Principal Investigator or support senior research leadership for studies relevant to psychosis, early intervention, personalised prognosis, treatment innovation and reducing inequalities in access and outcomes. The role will contribute to grant applications, academic outputs, national research networks and the development of competitive research fellowship applications, while engaging with industry partners to expand experimental medicine and innovation capacity.

Person specification

Essential

Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
MRCPsych or equivalent
Obtained inclusion on the Specialist Register; or within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry, or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development.
Substantial experience of psychiatry, including working with people suffering from severe mental illness, preferably in a community setting
Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level. The ability to nurture the careers of junior team members.
Commitment to clinical audit within multi-disciplinary team.
Knowledge of translational research in mental health research
Experience of submitting grant applications and evidence of successful grant funding
Record of scientific publication appropriate for career stage.
Leadership, management and influencing skills
High-level communication and organisational skills.
Ability to work creatively within multi-disciplinary team.
A strong and dedicated vision that fosters innovation.
Demonstrable interest in the provision of gender sensitive mental health service
Willingness to be involved in management of service.
Able to participate in Consultant on-call rota.
Able to travel
