Clinical Fellow in Microbiology

12 month role supporting the delivery of Microbiology services. The post holder will have the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills, knowledge and attitudes related to clinical and laboratory practice in microbiology and virology. This will include: o broad understanding of the diagnosis and management of infectious diseasefrom a clinical and laboratory perspective o diagnostic skills required in the practice of clinical microbiology and virology o knowledge of specialist areas such as infection control, o communication skills required for the practice of clinical microbiology and virology and the teaching skills necessary for effective practice o knowledge of health protection aspects of clinical microbiology and virology o experience in research and development and critical assessment of publishedwork o acquisition of life-long habits of reading, literature searches, consultation with colleagues, attendance at scientific meetings, and the presentation of scientificwork that are essential for continuing professional development (CPD) o experience of the practice of clinical governance and audit (specialist and multidisciplinary) through evaluation of practice against the standards ofevidence-based medicine, which underpin medical microbiology and virology practice. There will be opportunity for participation in research within the department and in collaboration with the University of Leicester.

Clinical & Laboratory Duties: The post holder will be expected to work with the Consultants and other laboratory staff members (including other resident doctors and scientists) within the department and will be involved in: Provision of clinical advice Authorisation and interpretation of laboratory results on specimens, utilising Standard Operating Procedures under the supervision of the Consultant Microbiologists and Virologists. Ward based clinical liaison The post-holder is expected to participate in on-call duties during this post. Teaching and training opportunities: The department runs a regular weekly local teaching programme facilitated by a consultant microbiologist. There is also a regular ID teaching programme organized by trainees in Infectious Diseases and facilitated by a consultant in Infectious Diseases. There are also other educational opportunities available i.e. Regional training days, HIS trainee education programme (Infection Prevention themed), other ad-hoc departmental training opportunities and trust-organized Grand Rounds. The post holder will be encouraged to attend these wherever possible. The Department provides training and teaching for a wide range of professional groups, including postgraduate doctors in training, medical students, nurses, allied health professionals and laboratory staff. Where appropriate the post holder will be encouraged to contribute to this teaching both within and outside the laboratory.
